New hypnotherapy textbook offers fresh approach
Posted May 2005

For many years the standard textbook for UK hypnotherapy has been Hartland's Medical and Dental Hypnosis. That though may be about the change.

Amid continuing criticism of the recently revised fourth edition, a brand new work appears this summer which may well supplant Hartland's by offering a fresh and more accessible option.

'The Clinical Hypnosis Textbook' is being published by Oxford University Radcliffe Press and is already the set reading at six UK medical schools.

It's author is Ursula James, former Vice-Principal of the London College of Clinical Hypnosis, who has been among recent speakers at the James Braid Society.

Ursula James

Oxford University Radcliffe Press commissioned her to write a work designed for medical students and the result promises to be not only a textbook for hypnotherapy students but an essential handbook for experienced practitioners as well.

Priced £24.95 it comes with a companion CD and covers a wide range of therapeutic issues including application and contraindications … approaches within hypnosis … phobias and performance anxiety.

To coincide with the publication, Ursula James is presenting one-day workshops in both London and Glasgow entitled 'Diagnostic Protocols – the use of hypnosis in the medical setting' – with the fee including copy of 'The Clinical Hypnosis Textbook'. The workshops will focus on the skill of how to select the most appropriate hypnosis techniques and should prove useful to students as well as fully qualified practitioners. Ms James will demonstrate how the techniques in 'The Clinical Hypnosis Textbook' can be most effectively applied when working with real-life patient scenarios.
