Fresh moves towards professional self-regulation

Hypnotherapy within the United Kingdom may at long last be moving towards professional self-regulation.

Agreement has been reached on establishing a Hypnotherapy Working Group which has been tasked with preparing the groundwork.

This potentially highly important development follows an agreement reached earlier this year at a meeting sponsored by The Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health (PFIH).

This meeting brought together several leading hypnotherapy groups including the UK Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organisation. Due to its constitution the James Braid Society is not a full member of UKCHO but is listed as a “friend” of the umbrella organisation.

UKCHO’s secretary, Peter Matthews reports that the next meeting of the joint group will look at a consultation document, “Exploring a Federal Approach to Voluntary Self Regulation of Complementary Healthcare,” prepared by the PFIH.

More details can be obtained from UKCHO’s website (www.ukcho.co.uk/index.htm) where it is possible to download the organisation’s regular newsletter.

The newsletter explains how a federal structure is envisaged for the regulation of complementary healthcare, with a single Council for Complementary Healthcare, representing a number of individual complementary therapies, including hypnotherapy.

UKCHO’s formal response to the proposals is due to be be considered at its AGM on Wednesday 19 th July.
